about

“When borders shifted overnight
from over two thousand miles away
to just beyond the hill,
a desire to cast a line
to those now estranged lands
overwhelmed me."
On this, Griselda Sanderson's third instrumental album, twelve Tales from Across the Water are told. Each composition has its origin in a particular region or tradition, from the bagpipes of Ireland and North Macedonia to viola Beiroa from Eastern Portugal and the Hardanger fiddle of the Norwegian fjords. Soundscapes inspired by Lithuanian Sutartines, Neapolitan tarantellas, Gypsy cimbaloms, Moravian Verbunky, Cretan syrtos, French-Arabic jazz, Swedish polskas and the renaissance music of Seville and Antwerp are conjoured up.
Playing treble viol, fiddle, nyckelharpa, viola & piano, Griselda is joined by her brother Joel Sanderson (jellobass), Soufian Saihi (oud), Zingo Warde (uilleann pipes) and multi-instrumentalist Louis Bingham. Hand-made applewood xylophones and glass harmonica combine with seasonal weather, local birds, waves and insects to form musical vignettes of hope and friendship.
